Other abilities are free to cast, though they will generally interrupt the attack. The auto-attack can be toggled on or off. The traditional Auto-attack: Player clicks target, and as long as they are in range, they will continue to perform a basic attack on the target.
I am looking at three designs at the moment. I wanted to get opinions on the design of the unit's standard attack. This thread is in the context of a traditional 'hotbar' RPG combat system, be it Single player, co-op/party based, or MMO, but feel free to discuss it in other senses as well.
